QUEST: 1,000 Woodcuts Update
August 2003 -  192 completed
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

Slowly but surely, the quarter century mark nears...probably next spring sometime I will have a bash to celebrate the first 250. Things a bit slower this year, mostly due to selling activity. Too bad that making art and selling art are both full-time activities, but it is just a fact of the artist's life. One seems to take from the other in a not-so-gentle push and pull that can fill up a day in a hurry!

Next year I'm planning a gentler schedule of art festivals, keeping the "big ones" and dumping the fillers. This will leave more time for new creations and I hopefully can produce the ones running around in my head at the moment; they start to hurt after a while of running around up there! Right now I'm off to the great "Colorado Run" as I have come to call it. Two shows back to back 600 miles away from home, so I'm staying in the cool mountains in between. Should be fun, I am looking forward to some hiking in the mountains and hopefully two great shows in Breckenridge for Labor Day weekend and Castle Rock the weekend after. An adventure for sure!

Here is the remainder of the year's schedule; some very exciting shows coming up, like the Santa Barbara Jazz and Art and a spiffy San Diego indoor venture. Be sure to check for updates as I have been known to change the schedule: http://www.1000woodcuts.com/exhibits/exhibit.html

New Stuff:

Finished some rather large works and some engravings, mostly in the bristlecone tree series. I worked from the images of a photographer named Ken Ferrell, who kindly goes off to the windy peaks and hikes the rugged sierras so we can enjoy the striking images. There is a link to his website in the newer tree images. Here are the mini-images. Seems I'm going back to the classic black on white woodcut, although the landscapes are also printed on hand-made paper from Beechgrove Paperworks.

In the works at the moment, two playing cards for an international printmaker's exchange and a couple of calendar images for a joint calendar project with my favorite group of online printmakers. The images are different from my usual body of work, but a change of pace is good once in a while. They will be featured in my next newsletter. Oh and speaking of calendars, I'm producing some this year for 2004, will be available at my art festivals and through the website.

Thoughts and Ramblings

Tough lesson learned this year: I'm an incorrigible loner. Can't seem to play well with others...seems like some nun in Catholic school told me that a long time ago. I really thought I could but keep turning to the delicious solitude of my studio, my images, the silence of creating from the quiet mind...so the collaboration experiments come to an end. Well, except for the hand-made paper thing, which will probably go on ad infinitum because here the artists are working each on their own. I do admire people who can work in groups or in pairs and come up with great images and stick together for a fruitful and productive art life. But, a bit sadly, the buddy thing is not for me, although there's an upside to that too. More on this in the newest diary entry...if you're into that kind of thing.
