Happy Holidays!
I want to let you how important it is for me to send these e-mails
on a
regular basis. This activity of "reporting" provides me with the
checks and
balances that are absent since I took on the life of the artist.
It helps me
stay on course, eager to do more so at least I have something to
say every
month, and, most of all, connects me to a world of people. Artists
must do
many things alone to be successful, I believe, because of the strange
demands of the creative process. Without you, I would not only be
in
solitude, which is a necessary and wonderful thing, but I would
also be
alone.
Thank you and have a suberbly absolutely incredibly wonderful season.

Thoughts and Ramblings
This time I offer you the concept of absolute blissful rest. We are
about to
embark on a delightful journey to peaceful Kansas for a yearly vacation.
Kansas, and I mean this with love in my heart, is rated the 50th
state in
tourist satisfaction--I say, tourists don't know what they are missing
and
probably don't know where to look.
First, you have a wonderful house with a lot of light, a reading
room, and
what has come to be known as "the sleepy chair," where naps are
mandatory.
Surely everyone must have a chair like that one on their vacation!
You know,
the kind that reclines and lets the sunlight filter in and hit your
face as
you sit there and pretend to read.
Second, you have to have cold weather. Last year the sun shone,
the air was
cool but not cold and going outside was perfectly possible. What
a shame.
No, it has to be absolutely freezing cold out there, to invite staying
in
and curling up with a good book, a large book, one that must not
be finished
either this vacation or next. Zero is good, below is better, just
as long as
we can avoid slipping on the icy driveway.
Third, you engage in what we call "expeditions." These are the side
trips
that take us to the corners of Kansas that tourists miss. We must
see the
bison, again, and we must climb the frozen tower in the middle of
the bison
and elk preserve and marvel at the expanse, quickly, because the
cold soon
bites our faces and forces us back to the van. We must walk on a
frozen
lake, just to see if it holds, and calculate the depth of the ice.
Then we
go back to family and to hot meals and to the wood stove.
What else can we ask for?
May you all have a place like that, a place to rest and recharge
and thank
your lucky stars.
