QUEST: 1,000 Woodcuts Update
October 2000 - 69 completed
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

My dearest friends,

The Anniversary of what I have come to call "the plunge" was September 29th,
a year ago I became a full-time artist. So much more art to do yet, thank
goodness I just started...

New Stuff

All that vacationing last month seemed to spurt a bit of activity around
the studio, so I finished some prints I had started, started some
new ones... now I'm behind again!
New works, all figurative works--go figure (ha!):
"Ink and Paper"

Thoughts and Ramblings

I confess I have become a bit obsessed with TIME. So little of it when you
have things to do and it seems to go by so fast! I think the current
Vegas-rate is 60 seconds per minute, thank goodness we are a 24 hour town
and you can squeeze the days into the nights. Interesting what we choose to
do with time, and I keep telling myself that once wasted or passed...
Being an artist is a bit different than being employed (I "ain't" gonna say
which one makes more sense in terms of money). The biggest difference,
though, is that you become master of your time, completely! This is good but
a huge responsibility that catches you off guard, at first. Lunch now takes
about fifteen minutes, coffee breaks--who needs them!, no interruptions,
music is allowed, kitties and pups can be petted right from the studio, no
traveling time wasted if you happen to have claimed the garage as yours, no
chatting with co-workers on the way to the restroom, not even one phone
call...

Wonderful! But there is nobody to blame for wasting time now. And there is
no gray area anymore (am I really working right now?), you are
either working or you are not, there is no "Bossman," there is you and a
huge list
of things to get done and a sharp pencil to cross them out. You stop, time
keeps
going, things don't get done by themselves. Simple. The interesting result
is that time now yields more, seemingly. In Spanish we say: "riende mas,"
which describes the situation more accurately but I can't come up with a
decent translation and I don't have the time to look it up!
Hey, I said I have become obsessed didn't I? ;-)

Anyhow, there is a lesson here, I think. Mostly about what we call "wasting
time," or "passing the time." Wouldn't you like to learn how to hang on to
those moments and save them for later? If I come up with the secret for
saving time, I'll make sure and pass it on.
Maybe I'll try learning how to play the guitar during commercials...

This Month

If you happen to live or visit Las Vegas in the next couple of weekends,
don't miss Boulder City's huge Art in the Park (October 7 & 8), and
Celebration of the Arts at Hills Park in Summerlin (October 14 & 15). There
is an art auction and exhibit at the New Horizons Academy coming up and a
couple of exhibits out of town (some way out!).
It's all in the upcoming exhibits page:

Oh, and don't forget your "coupons" :-)

Quote(s) of the Day
"I have learned this at least by my experiment: that if one advances
confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life
he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours."
--Henry David Thoreau

"One of these days is none of these days."
--H. G. Bohn

Thanks for listening and health to all,
Maria
