QUEST: 1,000 Woodcuts Update
September 2000 - 63 completed (2 more darn'ear-done!)
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

My dearest friends,

With the vacation at the beginning of August and the art fair in September,
I had to dive into the studio fast to make up for lost time. Fortunately,
blocks are portable and I was able to carve while I sat under the beautiful
backdrop of Zion Canyon during the art fair. Most enjoyable little town.

New Stuff

Two new woodcuts are finished. I have wanted to use this beautiful bark
paper that I bought a while back, and tried to carve images that would
relate
well to the swirls of the paper. "Wood dances" seemed appropriate.
Let me know what you think!

Thoughts and Ramblings

My thoughts these days are being recorded in a travel diary. You see, I
still have roads in my head from the trip this summer and this time I wanted
to remember better and to share the experience. What joy traveling can
bring! There is something truly magical about driving the open road. It
really is motivating to go on a trip, despite all the catching up there is
to do upon returning.
In unrelated thoughts, it has been almost a year since I took what I refer
to "the plunge" (into full time art, that is). Interesting is one word I
would use to describe life as an artist; Spock might even say:
"fascinating!"
Self motivation is a huge obstacle for full time self-employed people, I
feel it and fight it every day. There are a thousand things to do and
sometimes the lists I make can be overwhelming. Many tasks I did not
envision myself doing at all, or as we like to say: "nobody told me!" But I
also found out that once I step out of the studio, nothing gets done at all.
As 1,000 woodcuts, the way to get huge things done is one at a time. In
Spain we say about starting a long task: "pon un pie delante del otro,"
loosely translated to: "put one foot in front of the other."
So we continue on the journey, one step at a time.

As I complete the illustrations for the road diary, I will upload some
updates.
Meanwhile, this is how it all started:

Quote(s) of the Day
I couldn't choose between these quotes, so here they are:

"Let us, then, be up and doing.
With a heart for any fate;
Still achieving, still pursuing.
Learn to labor and to wait."
--Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

"Lost time is never found again."
--Benjamin Franklin

"And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily."
--Col. 3:23

Thanks for listening and health to all,
Maria
