I have been making relief prints now for
five years. I got my B.F.A. at the University of Nevada of Las Vegas in
1998 and then took a year off and continued a body of work at home. Most
of my prints are a reflection of my large format drawings on wood. I have
been drawn to woodcuts especially because of the history behind them and
the beauty of the wood block itself. The process of cutting the raw wood
and proofing the block are exciting, as they lead up to an eventual print.
The tactile qualities that prints solicit are an appeal to me, with their
matte to semi-shiny inked surface as well as their embossed shapes and
forms. Linoleum cuts grant me a bolder print outlet and a quicker turn
around on making a print. Where I am able to create quick ideas and not
have to worry about what wood and paper will be best for a particular print
as is in woodcuts.
My influences have been German Expressionism
with their bold and narrative works such as Otto Dix and Max Ernst. I am
particularly interested in the propaganda posters of the World Wars and
the numerous revolutionary images as well of the past two centuries. The
Polish and Russian entertainment posters of the 1920's and 1930's have
captured my attention as well. An example would be the stenberg brothers,
with their "Constructing a Revolution in Soviet Design," work. I use a
lot of fashio-related magazines and teh Internet for resource material
with all the imagery they have to offer. Whether it is a close up of a
face or a particular pose that may satisfy my composition. A lot of times
I utilize a camera and mix it with life drawing to get a more preferred
image or situation for a piece. Even the audio influences of music secure
a means of arousing images for my work to push its attitude and its boldness.
I make drawings on wood as well, combining
mixed media such as ink, paint, wood engraving and graphite to create large
narratives. I have been interested in relationships of people and their
environments. I have created alternative environments to push teh aggressive
attitude that some of my work possesses. My drawings are usually almost
as big as life, with the use of wood as a picture plane, I feel that the
piece becomes more an object than just a drawing.
I continue to experiment with different
materials and print methods to fulfill my curiosity in printmaking and
currently am continuing my studies in graduate school at the University
of Nevada of Las Vegas for an M.F.A.
