Artist's Bio
Veronica Ceci is currently a vital part of the emerging art scene in Milwaukee, WI. She received her BFA in printmaking from the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design in 1999 at th eage of 20. Although her most popular works have been in the medium of installation, printmaking is still her first choice and Ceci is applying for several graduate programs for the fall of 2001.

In Milwaukee, Ceci currently works as a DJ on WMSE radio (www.wmse.org) and volunteers for the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program, as well as maintaining a full time position as Executive Assistant at a local Investment advisory. Veronica is curating the Wisconsin Printmakers Invitational, which will open in 2001 at the Uihlein Peters Gallery. In the past she has worked as an assistant to screen print artist Nancy McGee and as a teacher at the Walker's Point Center for the Arts. She is a member of both the Mid-America Print Council and the International Mezzotint Society.

Artist's Statement
Anxiety, distrust, isolation and obsession are conveyed in my work--a necessary and inevitable manifestation of my preoccupation with the spurious nature of our image-based reality. My fixation ranges between suspicion of all organized systems of belief (science, religion, language, etc.) to my total rejection of primary information distributors (media, government). I am incensed by the control that our society has relinquished to these governing bodies, and how they consequently pervert our perceptions of a broader reality.
I employ deliberate symbolism to highlight the weaknesses and question the assumptions of these institutions. Generally an easily recognizable object serves as an icon to represent a larger and more complex idea. I can then manipulate or juxtapose the icon with other images to creaty my statement of belief or pose a question. The possibilities of printmaking are a natural choice for this method of working.
I am frankly unconcerned if the viewer or participant can extract my literal intent from my visual presentation. It is my assertion that the intentional way in which I create my symbolism and mediate on its various aspects will communicate my meaning on some level, even if it is not consciously realized. For the viewer/participant the aesthetic aspects of the work should be the main concern.
